Cleanings

Adult Prophy

During this visit, a registered dental hygienist will remove plaque, tartar buildup, and stain from your teeth-especially in places where your toothbrush and floss have a hard time reaching. The hygienist will also give you personalized tips and tricks to help improve your oral hygiene at home. Cleanings are recommended every 6 months.

Fluoride

Strengthens teeth by aiding in the remineralization of enamel. Fluoride also inhibits bacteria from producing acid that could cause cavities. Your dentist or hygienist may apply topical fluoride varnish at your cleaning appointment if deemed necessary. Fluoride is usually applied at all children’s appointments.

Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning, non-surgical treatment of periodontal disease. Local anesthetic is used to make the procedure more comfortable. The dental hygienist will remove bacterial plaque and tartar buildup from both above and below the gums. This treatment can take up to four appointments.

Periodontal Disease

This is a disease that affects the supporting structures of the teeth. Bacteria in your mouth causes the destruction of the bone and gums surrounding the teeth. If not treated, the bone loss can continue and lead to the loosening of teeth and even tooth loss.

Periodontal Maintenance

This is similar to an adult prophy, but it is done more frequently. Patients who have been diagnosed with periodontal disease and have completed their scaling and root planing treatment are placed on a periodontal maintenance schedule. The cleanings are typically done every 3-4 months to help prevent plaque and tartar buildup and the progression of periodontal disease.

Fillings

When a tooth becomes decayed, commonly called a cavity, it needs to be repaired.  A chipped or damaged tooth/filling also needs repair. A filling is a restoration that will repair the tooth so that it is healthy again, and it can also restore the tooth’s functional ability.  Our office typically places white or silver fillings.

Silver Fillings

Amalgam is the material used in silver fillings. It is a durable options that works well for larger fillings or areas of decay that go under the gumline.

White Fillings

There are multiple materials used in our office that can match the color of teeth. Some types of filling material even have the benefit of fluoride. White fillings are more aesthetic so they are a popular choice for patients.

Please note that fillings are not a permanent restoration due to everyday use and the harsh environment of the mouth.  They may need future replacement and maintenance.
